On August 11, we celebrated the marriage of Kevin's sister Kim to Ed Park. The wedding was held at Viansa Winery in Sonoma, California. Joshua Lokahi had a great time getting to know his cousins, Michael, Paul, and Daniel. The kids especially loved the music, dancing, and best of all....a bubble machine!

Last Sunday we went for a walk around the lake with Joshua's grandma (the one from Hawaii). It was exciting. We saw a rabbit, a heron, a cardinal, many squirrels, several turtles and, of course, ducks galore.

Joshua celebrated his second birthday on June 10th. These two years have flown by! He had a few low-key celebrations: cup cakes with his preschool class, a little family party, and a neighborhood party. His tutu (Kalani's mom) is coming on Tuesday, so he'll have another little party with her. Here are a few pictures from his birthday festivities.

Week Between Christmas and New Years

We had a really nice week between Christmas and New Years. I worked at home so I was able to see Joshua and Kalani on my breaks. Since Joshua seemed so interested in seeing me work. Kalani set him up his own desk (and he loved it). He would wake up in the morning and want to go right to his desk. He had his little laptop Kalani got him for Christmas and a bunch of office supplies we had laying around.

While I was work Kalani and Joshua found other fun activities to do like dressing the dogs in silly hats (always a favorite) and playing outside.

The weather was unseasonably warm many of the days last week. So we were able to go out quite a bit.

For New Years we are planning to go to First Night Raleigh. It is the family New Years celebration in downtown Raleigh. They drop an Acorn at midnight (but I do not think we will be making it that late).

Merry Christmas Everyone,

We had a very nice Christmas here at home. Joshua just loved all the gifts and holiday sweets. Here are a couple of videos of Joshua on Christmas day. In the first one Kalani and Bogey are helping him unwrap a gift. In the second he is playing on a little laptop toy. He loves things that flash and make noise when he touches them.

The little orange Chinese outfit was sent all the way from China from Auntie Shannon. The weather was so nice last week (one day was 75 degrees!), that Josh didn't even need a jacket with the short sleeve vest!

Leanne came over for a nice Christmas dinner of rib eyes, asparagus, pear/gorgonzola/walnut salad (with delicious pears from my Uncle Paul and Aunt Clarette!), cherry cobbler, and more. We took these picture of in front of the fireplace.

This morning I took Joshua to the his favorite park. Here are some action videos. He loves these music pipes (a series on metal pipes each with a different note and metal ball to make it sound). The second video is him going up and down stairs (probably his favorite activity at the moment). We also walked all through the wooden fort structure and slide down several slides.

It was hard to capture video he kept wanting the camera. He had to really be into what he was doing.

There is not that much new going on here. Joshua is growing like a weed. We had a quiet Thanksgiving here at home (just the 3 of us). We will also be staying close to home for Christmas.

Happy Halloween Everyone!!

Here is a picture of Joshua in his monkey costume. He was dressed up here to go to the Apex Halloween carnival. We went with Tyler and Conner (see their costumes below. Dianne took more pictures at the carnival and I will post them once she sends them to me.

I know I have been incredibly lax a posting to this site. I do have a bunch of pictures from Hawaii I hope to get on here soon. I also have pictures from my mom's last visit. We did break our camera in Hawaii so we have not taken many photo since the trip.

Joshua is finally walking (Yeah!). He took his first solo steps a couple weeks ago and he is getting better all the time. Kalani has been taking Joshua to classes at the Apex community center (silly song and movement classes).

In July, Kalani, Joshua and I took a two and a half week trip to Hawaii. On Saturday July 8th we had a big party for Joshua's first Luau. We had the Luau at Don the Beach Commers Resturant which is right on the beach at The Royal Kona Resort.

Shelton Family Reunion 2006

In June Kalani, Joshua and I attended the Shelton Family Reunion in Fort Walton Beach Florida. We were there on June 10th, so we were able to celebrate Joshua's 1st birthday. As you see here Kalani is give Joshua some of his first birthday cake (my mom got his this cake in the theme of Disney's cars. Joshua got a lot of attention at th reunion being the youngest attending family member.

Another big event at the reunion was my sister's boyfriend Ed asked her to marry him. We are very happy for them both (we really like Ed). We have heard they are planning for a wedding next summer in California.

On the second day of the reunion we held the family golf tournament. We had three teams of 4 and we played a best ball event. The wining team (shown on the right) was Marty, Casey, Jimmy and myself. There I am wearing my victory hat :).

We stayed at some condos right on the beach, so we went to the beach everyday. We also had quite a bit of good fresh seafood. Bellow are some more pictures taken from the reunion.

Last Sunday our friends Dana and Piero invited us to Ciao Cafe (Piero's restaurant in Cary) for Piero's birthday party. Piero went to the same baker where Dana had had bought his birthday cake and got the second one above.

As the cake came out, Piero says to Dana, "I don't think your cake says Happy Birthday". Dana read the cake and was thoroughly Shocked.

Dana said yes. We are very happy for them.

This weekend was Joshua's first Halloween. On Saturday George and Jill had a party at their house that we were unable to attend.

On Sunday Kalani and I took Josh to a costume parade in Alice's neighborhood. Joshua wore his pumpkin suit my mom got him.

This week we started Joshua on some solid foods. He started with some rice cereal for a few days and than moved to banana oatmeal. He was interested right way. Opening his mouth as the spoon came in.

For Halloween my mom sent Joshua this cute Pumpkin costume. They are really soft pajamas. This is the second time he wore them. We will have him wear it again on Monday, but since he grows so quickly we wanted to use it a few more times.

Things are going well. I am getting so slack at posting. Last weekend was Leanne's Birthday so we had some friends over. This week my Uncle Paul and Aunt Clarette are come through town on their way down to Florida (to see my mom and grandma).

We have a Halloween party on Saturday. My mom already sent a pumpkin costume for him. He is so cute in it. I will make sure to take a picture sometime this week. For all this fans.

New tricks. He is really working on keeping his head up (still a bit wobbly). He can push him self up on his arms (but he does not really like being on his stomach much).

Tyler's Baptism

Today was Tyler's Baptism. To the left you have Tyler's Aunt Amanda, Cousin Araya, Grandfather Bunny and Tyler. Bellow we have a picture of Chris and Dianne with Conner and Tyler.

Dianne's Sister Danya and our friends Barry, Lisa and their Kids Colby and Drew. We went to service at Chris and Dianne's church where they baptised Tyler. Afterwards Dianne and Chris had us over to their house and provided catered food from Daniels Italian restaurant (YUM).

Saturday night we went to the new Fox and The Hound restaurant and North Hills Mall with Leannne, Barry, Lisa and the Kids. Josh was mesmerized by all the giant TVs. This is not associated with the old Fox and the Hound (which was a much better restaurant). This place was fine, just not what I was expecting.

Sorry I have pretty slack posting. Here are a couple of pictures from a week or so ago. As you can see Joshua is getting a bit better at sitting up. His head is gaining strength (but of course still a bit wobbly).

We look at him and he is getting so big compared to his size from weeks ago.

Last night I went with Chris to see Serenity. I am not sure if it is because this is the first movie I have seen in the theatre since Joshua was born, but I loved it. It was so much fun and so well done.

I would recommend watching the Firefly DVDs before going to see this. However, I do not think it is required.

On Tuesday Brian, Eric, Dave and I played some golf for my birthday. It was a lot of fun. Dave and I tied for the best score. Brian says he had to let me win since it was my birthday (whatever :)). Here is Eric at the 19th hole drinking some beer out of what looks like a shampoo bottle (and making his usual facial expressions).

This Saturday is the NC State vrs UNC game (hope we do not repeat last years disappointment). As you can see Joshua is looking forward to the game (Here he is with his NC State frog).

Saturday night we have out annual wine tasting party. I will post the results next week.

For Kalani's Birthday Eric helped me put together a bookshelf. This will help free some of the cabneit space that was being taken up with cookbooks. We got the shelf and brackets at Lowes. He just needed to finish and mount it. I think it came out pretty good.

My Mom came to visit us this weekend. For the most part we just hung around the house. We did take her out to diner yesterday for her birthday.

Today we went out to Greensboro to see our friends Lisa and Barry. Lisa and Barry moved to Raleigh about the same time Kalanai and I did (they moved down from Boston). Kalani and Lisa worked together at their first real job here. We have been good friends ever since. A few years ago Barry and Lisa moved to Greensboro about an hour and a half a way from Raleigh. We do not get out to see them enough, but we always enjoy seeing them when we do.

This was our first trip out to see them since their newest son Andrew was born in late April. Drew was born with Cystic Fibrosis and had to have two surgeries before going home from the hospital. Kaisei or Kaito Takeda

Our friends in Japan, Reiko and Shigefumi Kaito Takeda just had a baby boy. Their baby was born at 7:03am (JST) on 8/10 - the boy weighed 2,974g (6.6lb).

They have yet to decide a name for their son. They are trying to choose from Kaisei (sea + blue) or Kaito (sea + sound). Either way they will call him Kai for short.

Congratulations to both of you. We miss you guys.

Josh Goes To the Office

Yesterday Joshua and Kalani came to visit my office at Lunch. We went to Doce. A great salad and sandwich shop in RTP. Above is Dan, Koniuma-san, Justin, Tom, Ying, Joshua and Kalani.

Auntie Dana

Kalani's auntie Dana came to visit us yesterday. Dana stopped through Raleigh on her way back to Hawaii. She had just come from England where she gave a speech during a conference at Oxford.

We had a great day. I took the day off so that we could we could all hang out together. Mostly there was good Joshua/Great Auntie time.

We went to Rio Churrascaria for lunch. It is a Brazilian steak house. The waiters come around with Swords full of meat and serve it right on to your plate. They had also had a great salad bar.

In the afternoon we went for a nice walk around the neighborhood. Bogey was very happy about this. For dinner I made Penne Alla Vodka. And Dana was on her way back out west.

Sunday Diner

I also just found out this morning that our friends Chris and Dianne, who live right down the street from us now, are putting their house up for sale. We knew it was coming they had already told us. We will miss you in the neighborhood and best of luck with the new house.

Coffee Shop

It was a pretty uneventful week. Our big task for the week was giving Joshua a bedtime routine. We have been giving him a bath right around 8. We then go up to his nursery where Kalani feeds him and I read stories to them (we started the chronicles of Narnia). This is going pretty well. He usually goes to sleep by 9 and sleeps till 11 or 12.

For our big adventure of the week Kalani and I went to our local coffee shop (see picture to the left). Josh was great he slept for like an hour and a half while we worked. Kalani worked on her thank you letters/baby announcements (so yes they are still coming :) ). I did some work work (which was all lost because CCLT could not handle the changes I made ARGH!).

Next week Kalani's Aunt Dana is coming to see us. My mom got here plane tickets, she is coming on Aug 17th (could not wait till labor day weekend as planed :) ). We are looking forward to their visits.

We have some house repairs scheduled for next week. On Monday we have a roofer coming to fix our leaking roof and on Wednesday a repair man is coming out to look at our washing machine. Hopefully this will be the end of repairs for a while.

Kalani and I took the following nerd quiz. I scored and 85 as you see. Kalani scored a 7. I am such a nerd, Gosh! :)

Sorry I have not posted in a while. Things are going well here. We are just settling into our normal routine. There has been a couple chances to get new photos (Kalani went to a mommy meeting on Wednesday during the day and we went to a BBQ last night). Both times we did not end up taking any pictures.

Today Kalani's aunt Kiki came to visit us from Southport. We made sure to take pictures this time. We had a great day. We went to Xios for lunch (Josua's first time at a restaurant). Joshua was so good, he slept through the entire meal. Here are some pictures: one at the restaurant and the other at home.

Pasha's Last Day

Yesterday was Pasha's last day here. Pasha thank you for all your help over the last few weeks. It will tough adjusting to life without the third set of hands. We really enjoyed your visit and I am glad you were able to be a big part of Josua's frist month.

Yesterday we stayed around the house (there were rumblings of an ice cream excursion, put it never materialized). We did have 2 great meals. For lunch I made nori and dinner a tofu salad. We also finished off all the Vatrouska Pasha had made the day before.

We had planned on 2 big events for Friday (Kalani and her mom were going to bring Joshua to meet me and my co-workers for lunch and we were going to have people over for dinner that night). Starting Thursday Joshua was not sleeping well. We think he may have been sick. Than Friday morning and through the day Kalani started feeling sick. She says she is felling a bit better today.

We do not have any plans for the weekend. Pasha leaves early tomorrow. We will miss her and all her help. Next she is off to visit Kalani's sister Laura and her family.

Here is Joshua in his NC State Wolfpack bib, sitting up (for like 2 seconds). He cannot wait till football season starts ;).

Things have been going pretty good this week. Josh weighed in at 8 lbs 6 oz. He is putting on the pounds now.

Our friend Brian came over to dinner on on Sunday. We had made a buch of Metiteranian food (Baba Ghanoush, Hummus, Greek Salad and grilled chicken).

We sat around and read the story of the wolf and his pancakes (book we got from our library visit) - Snippity Snappity.

Kalani and Pasha went over to visit Dianne, Chris, Conner and baby Tyler.

Update - I just talk to my mom briefly. They said the faired through the storm just fine.

My mom and a grandma are riding out hurricane Dennis down in Pensacola FL. Dennis looks as it is hitting them dead on. We send you all our best that you (and everyone down there) will make it through today without harm.

Here is Bogey, Josh and I working on this Blog. Of course they do most of the work. I just supervise.

Yesterday was Joshua's first 4th of July. We just hung out at home all day. I started my second blog to display recipes I make and like http://milkywaydiner.blogspot.com/.

My friend Chris just called me and let me know that he and his wife Dianne have just had a baby. I will make a post with pictures as soon as we go and see them. Chris said Dianne and baby Tyler are doing well.

Luau

Kalani and her mom took Joshua to his first Luau (yes in North Carolina). It was over at some writer friends of Kalani's house. To the left you see Josh in his grandma decked out in their aloha attire.

Of course Joshua was a big hit at the party. Below you can see some of the Luau spread which included Huli Huli chicken and Hawaiian kind macaroni salad.

Our freinds Jim and Alice just had a new baby, Caitlin Rose Salmonson. This is their second child. Kalani and Alice worked togeather a few years ago. Now Jim and Alice live about 5 minutes from us.

First 4th

This is Joshua's first 4th of July weekend. Here is a cute picture in the kind of silly hat he will look back on and say "Mom what where you thinking".

On Friday we went back to see the pediatrician. They said Josh looks great, but he still has not gained quite as much weight as they would like to see. Therefore, we still need to wake him up to eat every 3 hours whether he wants to get up or not. He has been getting up on his own more often than before, so this is not as big of a deal. We taking him back to be weighed on Tuesday.

Before going to see War of The Worlds on Friday, Eric stopped by to see the baby. I remember being able to go out on Friday night. Seems like only a few weeks ago :).

Here I am right before I went back to work on Monday morning.

Pasha is sick. She thinks she may have caught the flu that Kalani thinks she may have caught from Laura when she was here. We think Josh may have had a bit of it as well last week, but it did not last more than a day for him. So far I have not caught it (knock, knock, knock).

I get a four day weekend coming up (4th of July and we also get Tuesday off as a site holiday). We do not have any plans. We will probably barbecue on the 4th.

Here is a great picture of Jushua Pasha took before she got sick. This was was his most awake playtime so far. Lasted almost an hour.

Weekend

We had a pretty quite weekend. I go back to work on Monday. I was able to get some last minute things done around the house (fixed the doorbell, downstairs light, garbage disposal, unclogged sinks etc.).

We also got our dog, Bogey, back from the kennel. We had him there because we were not sure how he would be around Kalani's mom (he can be pretty possessive of Kalani and the baby). We figured we would try him back for the weekend. Things went great he seems to love Kalani's mom (seemed to be a bit possessive of her too).

Kalani's mom Pasha arrived from Hawaii today. She will be with us for about a month. Due to jetlag she did not have too much awake time today in North Carolina.

Father's Day

This weekend was my first Father's Day weekend. Kalani's sister Laura came back into town to see Joshua. On Saturday the girls took Josh to the mall for his first shopping trip (they are trying to corrupt him early). I however had a nice quite evening at home. It was very nice to just relax for a bit.

Araya

Yesterday we took a trip to see our friend Amanda's new baby Araya. Araya was born 2 days before Joshua. When we went to the hospital we knew Amanda had gone the night before. We thought they may both be born on June 9th. Araya came right away on the night of the 8th and Joshua held out overnight.

Late last night (actually early this morning) Josh's Aunt Laura came back to visit (she was here for a week and left 2 days before Joshua came). She is here for the weekend so I am sure she will be in the forthcoming posts about our weekend adventures.

Going Home

We finally got out of the hospital about 10:00 Tuesday night.

He met our two dogs. Chloe, our sweet dog, heard one cry and has since tried to stay as far away from Josh as she can. Bogey, our more macho dog, has been super interested in the baby and wants to follow anywhere he goes. The first few times Bogey heard Josh cry he ran around franticly like... what do we do what do we do...kind of like Josh's mom and dad felt!

Joshua seems to like his new home. For the most part he is sleeping away. Here he is chillin' in his CRIB.

Yesterday we had our first outing to the pediatrition. Afterwards we stopped by our friend Eric's. Kalani seems to think Josh is a dress-up doll and changes his outfits several times a day. Here he is dressed up in his Ralph Lauren baby outfit at Eric's.

This is the outfit Kalani picked out for this morning. He tore off the hat within seconds.

Picture Day

Joshua is out of his bili blanket today (yeah). He has another test this afternoon at 5. Assuming this all goes well we will be going home tonight.

With the blanket out of the way, it was time for Josh's official hospital photo. This will be available on the hospital web site.

This was our first time dressing him in non hospital cloths. As you can see not all new born clothes do not actually fit all new borns. Here he is drowning in the first outfit (and oh so happy about it).

We wanted him to open his eyes in the photo as he does here.

No such luck, here is a copy of the final photo. Still cute with the eyes closed.

Joshua Day 2

Joshua's second day started out great. He had been the perfect baby sleeping in 4 hour blocks, eating, pooping and than going back to bed.

Here is a picture of Joshua on his second morning looking as cute as could be (so his mom and dad say anyway).

Later that morning Josh was taken back to the nursery for further observation. He had some respiratory and other minor health problems from being born prematurely. He was later released back to us.

On his second night Josh was not as cooperative as his fist night. He was not sleeping between feedings most of the night. Leaving 2 tired parents. This morning however Joshua seems to be back to his sluggish ways (not really even wanting to be woken to eat).

They have also diagnosed Joshua with Jaundice. This has made his skin a nice tan complexion (clearly not from is haole parents). This is very treatable and not serious at all if treated. The treatment is to place a blue light next to the babies skin to help process the red blood cells.

Josh's First Day

Joshua Lokahi Bauer was born on June, 10 2005 at 9:11 AM EST. At birth Joshua weighed 7lbs 4 oz (quite big for a month early) and was 19'' long.

The delivery came after a hectic three weeks of Kalani being very sick with pregnancy-induced high blood pressure (pre-eclampsia)- we had 6 hospital admiddsion, ending in 16 hours of labor follow by a primary C-Section. Despite these obstacles both mom and baby are now doing very well. Here is a picture of Josh while we were still in the delivery room.
